70 Ways to Beat 70 – Biebel, Dill & Dill

Three credentialed authorities banded together and poured over thousands of documents and sources to determine the top changes an individual can make in their life to achieve optimal health. The findings that made this list are practical changes that any health-conscious person can implement into their daily routine. Plus, they are not only scientifically reliable (with 20 pages of annotated research supporting the findings), but also biblically sound. By combining current research on healthy living with important findings on the connection between longevity and faith, they provide readers with a scientific basis for practicing a faith-based, healthier lifestyle.

And you’ll be surprised: This list of the top 70 findings that benefit your health is full of changes you’ll actually want to make. That’s because the authors realize that health isn’t limited just to a person’s body, but also encompasses their mind and spirit. This list reflects that holistic approach, with scientifically-grounded ideas for changes you can make in your diet, lifestyle, mindset and even in your faith.

A sampling of the top 70 findings for living a longer, healthier life include:

Avoid fad diets.

Feast on fiber.

Be kind to your GI tract.

Save your skin.

Attend a healthy church.

Have at least one close friend.

Cry more, but also laugh more.

Forgive others—and yourself.

Simplify your life.

Enjoy a hobby.

Avoid the debt trap.

Pray 24/7.

Compiled as a handbook of healthy choices, its variety allows readers to use this as a resource to personalize the healthy game plan that works best for them. Dr. David Stevens, CEO of the Christian Medical & Dental Associations said of this book, “This is the health equivalent of the book of Proverbs – refreshingly concise, winsomely wise, and powerfully practical advice to follow to a happier and longer life.”

New Light on Depression - Biebel & Koenig

ECPA Gold Medallion Winner - 2005

The authors say:

We set out to produce the most comprehensive, reliable, readable and practical Christian resource on depression to date.

We discussed counseling and medical treatments objectively, presenting the more common styles of counseling in dialogues between counselor and client. We described both Christian and secular counseling approaches, even including some less commonly known approaches that seem to hold some promise. We described the most common medications and how/why they help. We described surgical and other interventions such as “shock treatment,” which have been shown to be effective in some cases.

Our approach was to envision a long conversation between a person with depression and/or a loved one and us—physician and pastor—with the goal of taking away the stigma while clearing away the clouds, ultimately providing a sense of hope even for those who have struggled for a long time…without making promises that no one can keep, such as “everyone who comes to our clinic is healed,” or “only this or that counseling method (secular or religious) is effective.”

We provided a variety of practical evaluative and decision-making tools, at least one in each chapter, including; a personal wholeness self-check and a depression self-check (both repeated at the end so readers can check themselves for progress), hints on how to talk with your doctor, checklist related to choosing a therapist, and a decision-making checklist for the depressed and those who love them.

We provided questions for personal growth and/or group discussion at the end of each chapter, in hopes that this book will help generate greater involvement of the church in providing support ministries for those who are depressed—acting, when this occurs, like a “mash” unit helping the wounded toward healing so they can get back to the front lines.

We showed that learning to live with depression—which is for some their long-term most constructive choice—can bring growth and produce help for others. In a word, even depression, when approached through faith, can become a means of growth and grace and communicating it to others in need.

Endorsements:

“This is one of the soundest books on depression I have ever read. Drs. Biebel and Koenig go far beyond the narrow confines of psychiatric formulations and look at the whole person in his or her experience of depression. In contrast to all too many professionals, they correctly emphasize the role that spirituality plays in successfully understanding it and recovering from it with new insights and a deepening of such virtues as courage and compassion. New Light on Depression is must reading for all Christians, be they professionals or members of the general public, and whether they are or aren’t currently struggling with their own bout of depression.”
- Frederic Flach, M.D., K.C.H.S.—author of The Secret Strength of Depression

From the Foreword:
"The chapter on myths and misconceptions is, alone, worth the price of the book. Among other things, the authors dispel the belief that real Christians don't become depressed. Denying that your depression is eal only worsens symptoms and delays treatment, or makes it impossible to deal with. Most important, the authors help you learn how to live with depression and help you realize that it can bring growth and new understanding of grace.

Simple Health - Biebel & Koenig

If you feel inundated by health-related information, to the point where you don't know what to do or who to believe, then this book is for you. Using a model of health that is broader than most (a bio-psycho-socio-spiritual model), Drs. David Biebel and Harold Koenig offer simple to understand and easy to practice guidance on how to become healthier and stay that way.

This book will take you beyond wellness overload to a deep understanding of the fundamentals of healthy living, from laughter to exercise to diet to helping others to building and maintaining good relationships with others and with God.

The faculty of Biola University named Simple Health as one of the twelve "must read" books of all time. Marc Apkarian, Ph.D., wrote: "It's simple to understand, practical to apply and sound in its rationale. Simple Health does a terrific job of addressing the role of multiple factors in healthy living, including sense of humor, creativity, stress management, physical exercise and rest, proper diet, nurturing of relationships, selflessness, and living according to your Creator's purpose for your life. Every time I thumb through it, I seem to encounter yet one more valuable point to consider about health."

Romancing Your Child's Heart - Monte Swan & David Biebel

This book will warm your heart and inspire your creativity as you seek to raise the next generation for the Lord.

An avid reader and homeschooler wrote, in her review published on Amazon.com: “[I have an] extensive library of parenting books collected in these past 22 years of raising four children. Although each book adds something of value to my insights into the `living out' of this mothering role, it is a rare book that becomes a bedrock to build upon for years to come. This is such a book. The wisdom, life, humor and joy that pour through each page of `Romancing Your Child's Heart' has revitalized and inspired our home...for Monte's passion for Jesus is real and extremely contagious! It's so clear in these chapters that the One Who captured this author's heart has also given him the burning desire to share the reality of this Divine Drama with his own children...and also with us. I am so grateful for that, and confident that this book will shine a whole new light on the high honor we have of introducing our children to the Author of what Monte calls `the original Love Story.'”

Monte Swan shared a fresh vision in the companion book by the same authors: Romancing Your Child's Heart; specifically, just as God romances us, so we must romance our children. If God is So Good, Why Do I Hurt So Bad? - David Biebel

In this best-selling classic on the subject of loss and renewal, first published in 1989, the author comes alongside people in pain, and shows the way through and beyond it, to joy again. This book has proven helpful to those who are struggling and to those who wish to understand and help.

Having lost his first son in 1978, Dr. Biebel became immersed in pain, again, in 1986, when his second son, Christopher, was stricken with the same genetically linked illness that had caused Jonathan's death just a few years earlier.

The preface captures the book's honesty and practicality, "All around us, people are in pain. Emotional, physical, relational, spiritual - whatever its sources, the pain feels the same. Even born-again, sincere, evangelical, Bible-believing, church-going, church-leading believers are in pain.... Many who hurt have been nursing the wounds for so long they can't remember what it's like to be anything other than sad. Others denied the pain and submerged the anger so long ago that they are unaware how the resulting depression, even bitterness, has subtly impacted their ability to love.... Now I know it's possible you've heard a lot of principles and endured too much advice. So I'll skip most of that and try for something else: Truth - one pilgrim to another. And the truth is, pain has two faces, human and divine. The human face is haggard, drawn, contorted, and streaked with tears. The divine is calm, assuring, kind, and loving - but otherwise streaked with tears."

Note: This book is a companion volume to Jonathan: You Left Too Soon, written by the same author after the death of his first son in 1978, described elsewhere on this site.

Jonathan, You Left Too Soon - David Biebel

NOW AVAILABLE AS AN eBOOK - SEE BELOW

A classic in-depth, extremely honest first person account of grief from the loss of a child. First published in 1981, this book will help those dealing with a similar loss or those who wish to better understand and help family or friends who may be struggling with such a loss.

In his foreword, Charles Swindoll wrote, “Stunned yet courageous, this pastor recorded his feelings, his questions, his guilt, his struggles, and even his bitterness. as you read his words, you will nod with understanding and weep with compassion. Your heart will beat heavily as you identify with his profound sends of loss ... Not since Joe Bayly’s A view from the Hearse have I found myself more in agreement. To this author, grief is real; it dare not be denied or ignored. Yes, its wounds must be handled with care and given time to heal. Preserving us from pious platitudes and empty cliches, David Biebel says it straight and he says it well. Best of all, he doesn’t attempt to answer all the whys. Old Joseph Parker [who said that there is a broken heart in every pew] would have appreciated David’s style and content. I certainly do. So will you.”

This is an intensely personal story of how one man, as a father and minister, came to terms with his bereavement and experienced a more mature realization of his faith. Both touching and inspiring, Jonathan: You Left Too Soon offers strength and reassurance to those who hurt, encouraging them on their journey through brokenness toward a greater sense of wholeness.

Note: This book is a companion volume to If God is So Good, Why Do I Hurt So Bad? written by the same author after his second son nearly died in 1986.

Excerpt from chapter 1:

"Daddy, if I was killed, would you still be able to find me?"

As we rode along together in the summer of 1978, I had warned Jonathan not to lean against the car door because he might fall out.

As usual, he had asked a series of questions beginning with "Why?" and I had tried to explain that if he fell out he might get hurt. In fact, he might be killed.

This prompted his simple inquiry. Perhaps it was the sheer pain of the idea that preveneted my response. Just the thought of Jonathan's being taken away was something I could not handle.

So I never answered him.

I wish I had. I also wish I had prepared him more fully for what he was about to face. I thought there would be time. He wasn't quite four years old, still too young to be able to understand the deeper things about life and death and God. There would be time, I expected, for all of that.

There wasn't.

Excerpt from chapter 1: Why? Why? Why?

“What do you mean, she’s dead?”

The words echoed through the chasms of my quickly numbing mind, but
I couldn’t make them come out of my mouth as I struggled to make sense
of what the woman on the phone was saying.

“How can you know she’s dead when you aren’t even here?”

We had called 911 because we couldn’t get nineteen-year-old Shannon to
wake up. Steve, her brother, was trying to do CPR. It was all very strange. She
had a smile on her face. Her body was warm. But her color was wrong, very
wrong.

She’s my daughter. She can’t be dead. She can’t be dead.

“Hello,” the voice said. “Are you still there?”

“Yes,” I mumbled.

“A team is on the way, ma’am. But let me ask again. Can you find a pulse?”
I looked at Steve. He shook his head, with tears in his eyes. “No. We can’t.”
“Then the girl is dead,” the voice said again. “There’s nothing you can do.”

How can you pronounce her dead as calmly and callously as you might
announce the time or the weather? I wondered. My voice said, “Thank you,” my
hand hung up the phone, and part of me disconnected from the rest of myself.

By the time the medical personnel arrived, I felt like I was hovering somewhere
near the ceiling, a spectator at some kind of macabre dramatic performance
in which my intuition said I had a lead part, only I didn’t know the
script. What are all these people doing here? I wondered. Why does the phone
keep ringing? Why is everyone so sad . . . especially Steve?

And Shannon, my dear, beautiful Shannon.

I watched as they wrapped her up and whisked her away, without even giving
me a chance to say goodbye. Didn’t they know that I needed to touch her,
to look at her, to remember her, to say goodbye?
